As the conflict between the Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, many are wondering how this impending crisis might play out in the cyber world. Half of the Ukraine’s six fiber links connect through Russia. If history is any clue, these links are likely to be shut down as tensions heighten in the region. Reportedly, Crimean communication facilities already have been seized and damaged cutting off the peninsular from the Internet. This silencing of information may go hand-in-hand with reports of website defacement and distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks against government websites, Ukrainian businesses and similar sites.
