Indictments Made in Online Credit Card Fraud

U.S. prosecutors handed down indictments to five men purportedly responsible for stealing at least 160 million credit and debit card numbers. The four Russian nationals and a Ukrainian are believed to have hacked into networks by disabling anti-virus software, stolen payment card numbers, and sold them to online resellers who marketed them to customers online. According to the indictment, payment processing companies Heartland Payment Systems® Inc. and Global Payment Systems® took the hardest hit. Other targets included a Visa® Inc. licensee, JC Penney® Co, JetBlue® Airways Corp and French retailer Carrefour® SA. Officials are calling the case the largest cyber fraud case to be prosecuted in U.S. history.
