Ransomware Evolving Into Formidable Malware

Ransomware is on the rise and users need to be aware of this invading and costly culprit. This type of malware infects a computer when users inadvertently download a Trojan from a phishing email or drive-by download. The victim’s computer files are then encrypted and held hostage until a certain amount of money is paid to have them decrypted. The most recent and persistent ransomware is Cryptolocker. Targeting computers running Microsoft Windows®, Cryptolocker encrypts files using RSA public-key cryptography, which relies on two digital keys – one public and one private. Cryptolocker stores the private key, which is needed to decrypt the files, until payment is received.

New Trojan Targets Vulnerable Microsoft Office® Users

Opening email attachments just got a bit more risky, especially for Microsoft Office® users working in the energy sector. Security software company Symantec® reports a new malware program named Trojan.Laziok arrives in emails and exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Office® that actually should have been patched by users back in April 2012.
