This year’s biggest threats are false anti-viruses

March 25, 2010  Security Suite

McAfee’s malware experts published statistics from a research analysis of rogue anti-spywares, or otherwise known as scarewares. During the first quarter of 2008, the number of these false security software applications increased by 660 percent. The biggest problem is that this kind of moneymaking is unbelievably lucrative. One certain fraudulent company last year gained an estimated $180 million from the sale of over 4 million copies of such false applications. At that level of profit, it becomes easy for such companies to develop these products to such a professional level that even experienced users are fooled and become victims. The standard method is to show false notifications about infections in your computer, which is then followed by an offer to purchase the actual software. See here what a classic rogue antispyware alert looks like! »
