Cybercriminals will focus on the Olympics in London

August 02, 2010  Security Suite

Statistics tracking fraudulent emails and phishing attacks show a growing trend in the use of global sporting events for cyber criminal activities. Virus carrying emails and articles about the upcoming Olympics in 2012 are flooding the Internet in an attempt to infect users’ computers. These statistics are based on the dramatic growth of cyber criminal activity during the 2010 World Cup in comparison to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. A significant increase in the sophistication of abuse methods is visible. During the World Cup, social networks were heavily used by cyber criminals. Actual phishing pages were actualized and optimized during the championship using the most popular word searches. There were also attempts at abusing smart phones using similar methods. It is expected that a large growth of cyber attacks will occur in connection to the London 2012 Olympics.
