Earthquake in Japan exploited to spread spam and malware

March 18, 2011  Malware News

As in previous cases of natural disasters or major events in the world, we are compelled to warn users against abuse of reports with information about earthquakes in Japan and its aftermath. The social networking site Facebook has had many different groups appearing and offering support for Japan by joining the group or the marking it with the designation "I like it”. On the network Twitter, many tweets are leading to a number of photos and videos filmed by people directly from the disaster. When a user visits the Web, they become the target of fake antivirus FraudTool family. DesktopSecurity Defrauders are also trying aggressive optimizing of their sites to promote the leading search engine rankings asking for the latest news and developments of nuclear power station’s damage. When visiting their Web site the user is then routed to malware or other potentially dangerous sites. We encourage our users to use only proven news sites and to use our updated web shield Web Security Guard.
