End of the World Buzz Gives Rise to Cyber Attacks

December 12, 2012  Security Suite

According to the interpretation of the Mayan calendar, the end of the world is coming. The Internet is abuzz with various conspiracy theories and guaranteed predictions of doomsday. This information attracts all types of commercial cyber attacks. Exercise caution before visiting any of these sites, many of which are fraudulent. Also pay close attention to email messages you may receive on the topic; even when they are from known contacts, be cautious because they may have fallen victim to a hoax, spam or malware. Attacks on social networks are expected to rise as well, so be careful about clicking on embedded links referencing the Mayan calendar. The best protection is to keep your security software active and updated with real-time shield enabled, along with the latest versions of your system’s programs, such as Acrobat® Reader, Internet browser and its operating system.
