Fake Facebook® Profiles of Religious Leaders Garner Donations

July 02, 2013  Security Suit

Followers of religious leaders on Facebook® need to take precautions before donating any monies to promoted charities. According to investigators, impersonators are setting up fake profiles of well-known religious leaders, cultivating a following, asking for contributions under the guise of a specific charity and then pocketing the donations. Reportedly, the best way to avoid being scammed is to search for the person’s name first on Facebook® or the Internet to verify legitimacy before liking them or becoming a friend. On Facebook®, the number of likes or friends a page has usually is a good indicator if a page is legitimate. A search on the Internet to the religious leader’s official website may lead to a Facebook® button, which will link you directly to the correct page.
