Microsoft®, FBI Dismantling Cybercrime Ring

June 11, 2013  Malware News

A massive botnet network responsible for online banking and identity theft has taken a hit. Microsoft® along with the FBI stopped communication in June between 1,462 Citadel botnets and computers infected by its malware.

Microsoft® warned this did not completely eliminate Citadel botnets. Cybercriminals create botnets by infecting a large number of computers with malicious software that takes control over a computer without owners ever realizing it. Reportedly, more than 5 million people worldwide have been affected by this malware with over $500 million in losses attributed to its keylogging attacks. Countries with the highest concentration of Citadel botnets are the U.S., Europe, India, Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore.
