Flash Messages May Cause Denial-of-Service for Google® Nexus® Phone Line

December 05, 2013  Malware News

Google® Galaxy Nexus®, Nexus® 4 and Nexus® 5 using Android™ 4.x firmware may disconnect from phone service or be forced to reboot when receiving a large number of Flash® SMS or Class 0 SMS. Reportedly, the listed Nexus® phones are designed to place these special SMS messages at the top of the display screen and remain there until they are dismissed or saved. Since these messages do not provide audio notification, many users are unaware of the incoming messages. Users have reported when multiple Flash® messages come in and are not handled, the Nexus® phones begin to behave unusually, causing many to reboot. If a PIN is required to unlock the SIM card, the phone will remain disconnected from the network and users may be unaware until they look at the phone screen.
