Ransomware Evolving Into Formidable Malware

November 25, 2013  Malware News

Ransomware is on the rise and users need to be aware of this invading and costly culprit. This type of malware infects a computer when users inadvertently download a Trojan from a phishing email or drive-by download. The victim’s computer files are then encrypted and held hostage until a certain amount of money is paid to have them decrypted. The most recent and persistent ransomware is Cryptolocker. Targeting computers running Microsoft Windows®, Cryptolocker encrypts files using RSA public-key cryptography, which relies on two digital keys – one public and one private. Cryptolocker stores the private key, which is needed to decrypt the files, until payment is received.
