Hackers Set Sights on Social Media

September 10, 2013  Security Suite

Social media is becoming the next playground for hackers looking to steal identities and money. A technique known as cloning or deep mining are giving cybercriminals easy access to personal information. Cybercriminals hook into social media accounts by getting users to click on certain external links, games, apps or accept a friend request. Once done, hackers copy the individual’s information to create an exact replica of the victim’s profile. A plea for help is then sent to this person’s friends, requesting monetary assistance to remedy an unfortunate mishap or tragedy. Facebook®, Twitter® and other social media sites have fallen victim to this ploy. Antivirus software, password protections and vigilance can help prevent against these types of attacks.
