Suspected Hacking Kit Creator Arrested

An arrest in Russia may have nailed the creator of the infamous Blackhole and Cool exploit kits. According to Europol and the European Cybercrime Centre, a high-level cybercriminal is now behind bars. If it is the man known under the alias Paunch, a major player in the crimeware market is caught. His malware kits were once big sellers, giving buyers an easy way to infiltrate users’ computers. Targeting vulnerabilities in Windows® software, the Java® programming language, PDF files, and the Adobe Flash® media player, the kits could add malicious code to hundreds of thousands of websites, which then added malware to visitors’ computers. These kits also helped create false links in spam messages that lead to malicious websites that infected any linking computers.

New Trojan Targets Vulnerable Microsoft Office® Users

Opening email attachments just got a bit more risky, especially for Microsoft Office® users working in the energy sector. Security software company Symantec® reports a new malware program named Trojan.Laziok arrives in emails and exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Office® that actually should have been patched by users back in April 2012.
