Merchants Advised to Remain Diligent with Software Updates to Sidestep Shellshock Bug

Retailers need to pay close attention to their payment card data systems.  The PCI Security Standards Council, which develops technical standards for the payment card industry, is advising merchants to keep up with software updates if they want to pass annual audits and stay in compliance. This warning was issued primarily to prevent retailers from falling victim to the recently discovered Shellshock bug in the BASH (Bourne Again Shell) command-line interpreter. Although there have been no reports of exploits through the Shellshock flaw, it has the potential to pose serious risk to the payments industry.
