South Korea Faces Strong Cyber Attacks

July 09, 2009  Security Suite

A high number of servers at South Korean state institutions were overwhelmed after massive cyber attacks earlier this week. The targets of the attack were websites of local parliament, ministry of defense, political parties and popular big newspapers. The attack also affected online banking of some South Korean banks for a short period of time. It is believed that the attacker is one of the largest botnets made up of approximately 50,000 computers. Most of these infected computers are located in South Korea, which is a perfect environment for botnet administrators. Local users there have high-bandwidth Internet connections and spend a lot of time on the Internet every day. According to industry experts, the same attackers stand behind recent attacks that disabled websites of the U.S. Treasury Department and Federal Trade Commission.
