Hackers use Twitter to control botnets

August 28, 2009  Malware News

The standard means to control a botnet are with so called IRC channels. Recently it´s been discovered that attackers also use this to abuse social networks, specifically Twitter. Twitter´s security team has already blocked an account that kept publishing so called tweets (messages addressed to other users) that contained commands or download links for executable files. Using IRC channels abuses classic RSS systems to update single computers in a botnet. So far, Twitter blocked only one user account called “Upd4t3” but deeper analysis shows that it was not the only account that was abused by attackers in this way.
