Skype® Attack Sends Message on Government Surveillance

A New Year’s Day attack on Skype® and its social media accounts is being credited to the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), which warned Microsoft® users that their Hotmail® and Outlook® accounts were being monitored and data sold to governments. Reportedly, the SEA used the Twitter® account belonging to Skype® to release this message, which alludes to recent disclosures alleging Internet companies allow governmental surveillance. Skype®, whose parent company is Microsoft®, reportedly had issues with its Twitter®, Facebook®, and blog accounts on January 1. The company said no user information was compromised in the breach.
