How Do I Deactivate the Sticky Keys Dialog
The Microsoft Windows® operating system offers us various accessibility options that help facilitate our work on the computer. These functions are specifically aimed at handicapped users. However, sometimes these features can handicap you instead and you may not want to use them. One such example is the “Sticky Keys” function. It enables you to type a keyboard shortcut by pressing the appropriate keys one by one. It is activated once you press the “shift” key five times in a row, and if you do so the dialog box will appear. This may be annoying and troublesome, so from the instructions below you can learn how to deactivate this Windows® dialog and function.
Instructions for Windows XP®:
- Press the “shift” key five times.
- Click on the “Settings” button.
- The “Accessibility Options” window will open and you will view the “Keyboard” tab. Click on the “Settings” button in the “Sticky Keys” section.
- Uncheck the “Use shortcut” checkbox to disable the dialog box. You can set more options for this function by using the other checkboxes. Click on the “OK” button.
- Close the “Accessibility Options” by clicking on the “OK” button.
Instructions for Windows Vista®:
- Follow the “Start > Control Panel” path.
- In the left pane switch to the “Classic View” option.
- Open the “Ease of Access Center” feature.
- Open the “Make the keyboard easier to use” option.
- Click on the “Set up Sticky Keys” link in the “Make it easier to type” section.
- Uncheck the “Turn on Sticky Keys when SHIFT is pressed five times” checkbox to disable the dialog box. You can set more options for this function through the other checkboxes. Click on the “Save” button.
- Close the “Make the keyboard easier to use” option.
Instructions for Windows® 7:
- Press the “shift” key five times.
- Click on the “Go to the Ease of Access Center …” link.
- The “Set up Sticky Keys” window will open.
- Uncheck the “Turn on Sticky Keys when SHIFT is pressed five times” checkbox to disable the dialog box. You can set more options for this function by using the other checkboxes. Click on the “OK” button.
- Close the “Accessibility Options” by clicking on the “OK” button.
