How Do I Disable a Network Connection
While working on a computer you may face a situation when the network host controller needs to be disabled, or you just need to be offline and disconnected from the computer network. One solution is to unplug the cable from the PC, but that is not always easily accessible, but, there is another option. By following the steps below, you can easily turn off your network adapter through settings in your operating system.
Instructions for Windows® XP:
- Click the “Start” button. Then, click on the “Control Panel” selection.
- Now open the “Network Connections” selection.
- Right-click on the icon representing the network card you want to disable.
- Choose “Disable” from the right-click menu.
- The connection is now disabled.
Instructions for Windows Vista®:
- Click the “Start” button. Then, click on the “Control Panel” selection.
- Open the “Network and Internet” selection.
- Open the “Network Sharing Center” selection.
- In the left pane, click on the “Manage network connections” link.
- Right-click on the icon representing the network card you want to disable.
- Choose “Disable” from the right-click menu.
- The connection is now disabled.
Instructions for Windows® 7:
- Click the “Start” button. Then, click on the “Control Panel” selection.
- Open the “Network and Internet” selection.
- Open the “Network Sharing Center” selection.
- In the left pane, click on the “Change adapter settings” link.
- Right-click on the icon representing the network adapter you want to disable.
- Choose “Disable” from the right-click menu.
- The connection is now disabled.
Tips and tricks:
- To enable the network adapter, follow the same instructions but from the right-click menu choose the “Enable” option.
