How Do I Disable the Windows® Search Service

October 05, 2011

While Windows Vista® informs about the indexing of files in the system tray icon, Windows® 7 does not. If you are searching for files using a search service your system will speed up if you use a search service with reduced speed. However, if you're searching for files in another way, you can safely turn the indexing off. This may speed up your computer.

Instructions:

  1. Click on the “Start” button, then right-click on the “My Computer / Computer” icon and choose the “Manage” option.
  2. The “Computer management” windows will open. On the left, expand the “Services and Applications” option.
  3. Click on the “Services” in the left pane.
  4. In the right part of the windows all services available are listed, locate the “Windows search” service and right-click on it.
  5. Choose the “Properties” option from the menu.
  6. Change the “Startup time” dropdown menu selection to “Disabled,” and click on the “OK” button.
  7. Your Windows® search service is now disabled.
