How Do I Easily Install Windows® From a USB Disk

January 17, 2012

At times you may need to install the Windows® operating system to a computer without an optical drive. You have only two choices; plug in an external optical drive or install it from a USB flash drive. The process is quite similar to a standard installation, but you have to create a bootable USB flash drive. For this purpose, you can use the WinToFlash© application which can transfer the installation media of Windows XP®, Windows® 2003, Windows Vista®, Windows® 2008, Windows® 7 and Windows® 8 from a CD or DVD to a USB drive. To learn how to download, install, and use this application, follow the instructions below.

WinToFlash© download and install instructions:

  1. Open your Internet browser and go to the WinToFlash© download page.
  2. Download the latest version, click on the yellow link, click on the “Download” button, and then click on the “WinToFlash” link. Save the zipped file to your computer.
  3. Unzip the downloaded file.
  4. Run the “WinToFlash.exe” file. You have to go through the “First Start Wizard”.
  5. At the welcome screen, click on the “Next” button.
  6. Read EULA page, check the “I accept EULA” checkbox, and click on the “Next” button.
  7. Then, click on the “Next” button again. Click on the “Exit” button on the “Commercial”.

Installation media transfer instructions:

  1. Click on the “Windows Setup transfer Wizard” button.
  2. Click on the “Next” button.
  3. Now, enter the drive letter of your optical drive into the “Windows file path” box and the drive letter of your USB flash drive into the “USB drive” box. Click on the “Next” button.
  4. Now, read the license agreement and select the “I accept…” radio button. Click on the “Continue” button.
  5. Confirm the warning about USB drive deletion by clicking on the “OK” button.
  6. Now the formatting of the USB drive will proceed, followed by the transfer of installation files.
  7. Once the process finishes, click on the “Next” button and the USB bootable drive will be ready.

Tips and Tricks:

  • To set a boot from a USB you have to enter BIOS (press delete/F10/F1/F2). In the advanced settings go to the Boot menu order and set the first device to USB.
