How Do I Play MP4 Videos
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container format for audio, video, subtitles and images. MP4 files use low bandwidth making them more accessible to people on the Internet. Compared to the well-known AVI format, MP4 has wide usage for compressing picture and sound. MP4 can have 3D objects, menus, and more than one subtitle and audio tracks. This format is usually used for recording high definition (HD) videos and movies and even for digital camera movie clips. To play MP4 format videos on your computer, there are many types of media players for Windows®-based systems. One such application is VLC Media Player which you can install for free, just follow the instructions below.
Instructions:
- Open your Internet browser, then go to the VideoLAN home page.
- Click on the button “Download VLC®”.
- Save the file to any location in your computer.
- Locate the downloaded file and run the installer by double-clicking the file. If your operating system asks you for confirmation, click on the “Run” button.
- When the installation wizard extract files appear, choose your language and click on the “OK” button.
- On the next dialog box, click on the “Next” button.
- Read the License Agreement and click on the “Next” button. On the next two pages, do the same.
- When the installation is done, click on the “Finish” button.
- The VLC Player starts by clicking on “Media > Open File” in the main navigation bar.
- Navigate to the MP4 video file and click “Open”. The video will automatically play.
Tips and tricks:
- If you want to open MP4 files automatically in a specific player, then set the default application for opening the file. (Refer to the article that focuses on the changing the default application for opening file).
- You can change the playback speed by clicking on “1.00x” icon at the bottom of the player.
