Critics Question Remarks by Incoming EU Digital Commissioner on Cloud Security Protection

Incoming European Union Digital Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society Gunther Oettinger is being questioned by critics following his remarks that essentially blamed victims of data breaches. Commenting on recent hacks into celebrities’ iCloud® accounts that exposed nude photos, Oettinger didn’t address protections against cybercriminals but pointed the finger at users. According IDG News Service, Oettinger remarked, “If someone is dumb enough to as a celebrity take a nude photo of themselves and put it online, they surely can't expect us to protect them. I mean, stupidity is something you cannot -- or only partly -- save people from." Critics claim this comment made during a three-hour confirmation hearing calls into question Oettinger’s ability to oversee effective data protection for Europe.
