Social Engineering Attacks Target Apple® Users and Others

December 20, 2012  Malware News

IT security company Eset® is warning of a social engineering attack primarily focused on Apple® users, but other operating systems could be susceptible, too. An email claiming to be from Apple® confirms post cards or another type of correspondence is going to be sent to the user’s entire contacts list. To cancel this service, the user is directed to click on a link, which goes to a site where a background application is placed on the user’s computer. The attackers now have full control over the computer and personal information can be collected. Another variation is an email claiming to be from a well-known company requiring payment on an invoice or an update to software, like Flash® or Oracle® Java®. Users are directed to click a link in the email to get more information, cancel service or update software.
